Day 5 - Checking out the Pier and Hiking Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park

Today turned out to be a pretty awesome day.  We decided to try checking out the Santa Cruz Pier one more time as it wasn't the weekend nor was it as busy as it had been.  We had a ball walking along the Pier. We started out seeing different birds as we were walking and the closer we got to the shops on the Pier we started to see a few Sea Lions.  At the end of the Pier there were tons of Sea Lions everywhere.  We were taking pictures all over the place.  We even managed to see a few star fish however they were underneath the water and hard to spot.  We could see a bunch of people surfing on the water across the way from us and decided to see if we could go over where they were surfing.  The water was not as rough as yesterday but the waves were still good for surfing.  We saw our first lighthouse and even a mole digging a hole in the ground.  After our walking and picture taking we went back to the car to grab some lunch.  We had left over sourdough bread and chicken so we made some sandwiches and ate by the car.  We met up with people from Minnesota and they told us about a nice place to visit called the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.  We decided to check it out and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves there.  It was a nice hike.  We even saw a banana slug but the picture I had taken was out of focus.  The trees were huge here.  They had a fire over 100 years ago and you could still see the burns on the trees.  We learned that the burls on the trees can stem new branches and grow into new trees.
In the evening we went out to see if we could take a sunset picture.  Unfortunately it really clouded over so there was no sunset.  We went for dinner along the Pier at a place called Firefish Grill.  We had a cup of Clam Chowder that was delicious and some Firefish Rockefeller which had shrimp, scallops, fresh fish and Salmon mixed with Hollandaise sauces and spinach and bacon.  Was yummy.
